Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is an active transdermal drug delivery system that delivers ions of a chosen drug (medication) through the skin using an electric current. The alternatives to iontophoresis are injections, oral medications and passive transdermal. Iontophoresis eliminates the typical tissue trauma and systemic effects of bolus injections. In addition, iontophoresis yields higher local tissue concentrations of drug compared to oral medications while avoiding any gastrointestinal side effects and eliminating the peak and trough effects commonly associated with systemic oral medications.

The application of iontophoresis requires the use of a non-disposable power supply instrument and a disposable electrode assembly. Supplies consist of the disposable electrode assembly, disposable syringe, drug and skin prep material.
